Surface Design

I have started a textile/surface design class at the California School of Professional Fabric Design. We started with a 30-second sketch of a live flower (for me it was a Gerbera Daisy). We then arranged multiples in a close pattern (old fashioned scissors & paste!), and then traced the whole pattern. We transferred the drawing laboriously using graphite transfer paper, and then did color tests, experimenting with how the colors butted up to one another. I enjoyed working with gouache for the first time, and found the meticulous painting technique very relaxing! I also transferred the pattern to raw bisque at “Color Me Mine” and painted the glaze, ending up with a satisfactory cheese plate.
