Whenever I drive to the Luberon, I must cross the Durance, and always have a problem keeping my eyes on the road, as I love the way the riverbed looks, especially in winter, when the riparian trees are bleached of color. The river used to be famous for flooding, but now the Canal de Provence has it all tamed, repressing the flow to control it. That’s why one is not permitted to go down there—they periodically release water, so one is at risk of being swept away. I went down there anyway—it’s not as if our drought conditions would necessitate such caution.
