In the winter (of the Northern Hemisphere) of 2018, I traveled to Argentina for 6 weeks. At the time, I was an avid tango dancer, and had just decided to try and learn Spanish. One place I didn’t want to miss, was the oldest café in Buenos Aires. Sure, it’s a tourist magnet, but if you have the patience to stand on line for a half-hour (or more), once you are inside, you can stay as long as you want, reading your paper having ordered a single café con leche.

One place I didn’t want to miss, was the oldest café in Buenos Aires. Sure, it’s a tourist magnet, but if you have the patience to stand on line for a half-hour (or more), once you are inside, you can stay as long as you want, reading your paper having ordered a single café con leche.

The Gran Café Tortoni is a cozy place, all wood and brass. You can soak up the atmosphere of the days gone by (the tragedy of Argentina’s financial history would suit their tango lyrics) when Buenos Aires had a comfortable position among the 10 richest cities in the world. The waiters are respectful, and they even host a tango show in the evenings.
