West of Marseille is the river Rhone delta. Much of the wetlands, named Camargues, are protected lands. Roaming these windy, harsh and mosquito-ridden fields and swamps are herds of wild Camarguais, who belong to a very ancient breed of horse. The glasswort, which turns red in the fall, can survive in the salty earth.
